RECOMMENDED CHEWS
Many chew treats occupy the shelves of our local pet stores. In general, products that include ingredients that present a danger of blocking the intestine or products that increase the risk of tooth breakage are toys that should be avoided.
Products to Avoid:
RAWHIDE! Rawhide presents a small but avoidable risk of intestinal obstruction which requires expensive surgery to correct. Also, the chemicals used to manufacture rawhide products are often unthinkable for use in an edible product and are often manufactured overseas in counties with a history of pet food problems in the past.
COW HOOVES are a common culprit in tooth breakage.
NYLABONE EDIBLES or NYLABONE PUPPY chews have been found to also sometimes cause intestinal obstruction. |
Products we Recommend:
COW TENDONS break apart easily and do not swell in the stomach.
BULLY STICKS are made of the "member" of bulls.
GREENIES (reformulated), unlike the old un-safe greenies, now offer a safe alternative to rawhide.
COW SHIN BONES (sterilized) are thick and do not splinter. They are great for cleaning teeth. If you fill them with peanut butter they are a big favorite with most dogs!
COW KNUCKLE BONES (sterilized) also do not splinter and are also great for cleaning teeth.
GOOD OL' FASHION STICK from the back yard. As my old veterinarian used to say, "A little cellulose never hurt anyone!." And they are free! Never allow your dog to have any sticks that come from treated lumber instead of trees. Untreated lumber is fine. |
